Should i buy a laptop from the uk from dixons.co is it a legit site?
http://www.dixons.co.uk This is a UK store im in the US. I'm wondering do i have to pay that same amount of in US dollars? Do u think it will take a while for it to get here? Last time i purchase a HP straight from China it took about 2 weeks will the uk be quicker? The price is 479.00 And i want to know if this site is legit or fraud.

Answer 1 :
Yes, Dixons is legitimate. However, I wouldn't buy anything from them, they're the company who run PC World. As a UK resident if I wanted to buy something like that I would either buy from eBuyer or Overclockers. http://www.ebuyer.com/ http://overclockers.co.uk/ PC World/Dixons/Currys is for noobs with more money than sense. As you're in the US, why not consider somewhere like Newegg? http://www.newegg.com/
Answer 2 :
You would need a power adaptor as uk is 220/240 volts, the prices on the site are in pounds, you would have to pay dollors , if its £479 pounds that is around $799 .

Where can I buy a laptop from the UK here in the U.S.?
where can I buy a laptop from the UK here in the U.S.?
I'm going to college ("University") in London towards the end of next month, and I really don't want to buy the laptop when I get there, cause I'll be moving and adjusting and all that good stuff. And the laptop is the final thing I need. I was gonna get another mac but now I don't think so. Where can I buy a UK laptop? will they be able to ship it to the U.S.? I would have just used the one I have now, but they say it's not a good idea even with a converter, because it can cause a fire =/ really? thanks!

Answer 1 :
Who told you that it's not a good idea with a converter? That's garbage. The computer power adapter should be 120-240V autoswitching, which means the ONLY thing you need to change would be the plug. Heck, you don't even need a converter or a different power adapter, just the cable that goes from the plug to the power adapter.

I have unlimited internet plan on my 3G phone can I connect it to laptop? [UK]?
Can I utilise that 3G connection for browsing on PC? I am using T-Mobile UK. Nokia 5230

Which phone is it? Using the 3g connection on your PC is called tethering. Sometimes carriers charge more just for the ability to tether but there could be a way around it depending on what type of phone you have.

How can I use my laptop to access the Internet in the UK?
How can I use my laptop to access the Internet in the UK?
I'd like to be able to access the web and my e-mail when we are traveling in Scotland and England. Would I need a wireless modem? What providers are there?
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
If you want full flexibility, then www.three.co.uk probably offer the best value for money wireless modem for short term (I'm guessing a few months rather than a standard 12/18 month contract) Otherwise, lots of coffee shops have wifi points and I believe McDonalds are rolling those out across the country too Good luck!
Answer 2 :
I usually take mine when traveling to the UK, but find that there are so many internet cafes there that it’s somewhat easier to just use theirs! (unless you are doing a lot of photography and you need to empty your memory cards or burn CDs) Using public computers, you don’t have to worry about leaving your computer in your room or car when you are out for the day, or in left luggage where others might have access to it. Here's a list of London Internet Cafes: http://www.cafeindex.co.uk/web/cindex.nsf/CAFESEARCHMAP?OpenAgent&pn=23 Or, search through out all of the UK: http://www.cafeindex.co.uk/web/cindex.nsf/cimap?openform Many places have wi-fi, but yes, you would need a wireless modem in your computer, which most newer computers come with. Generally what you do is purchase wireless internet time by the day when you are in a hotel, but some might provide it for free. But usually it's about $10/day. As far as your email, either open up a Gmail or Yahoo mail account (free) before you leave that you can access from any computer. You can either give everyone that address, or set them up to access your email from your regular provider which can be forwarded to your new email account.

Will a laptop purchcased in the usa work over here
Will a laptop purchcased in the usa work over here in the uk?
As the pound to dollar rate is 1:2, I was thinking of getting an apple macbook air. It would be purchcased in the usa, and bought over by a relative to the uk. Will it work, and would there be any problems?

Answer 1 :
yeah
Answer 2 :
You might have to get a power converter but that should be it.
Answer 3 :
Yes they will.
Answer 4 :
yea ill will hay can u chose me as youre best anser pleazzzzzzzzzz
Answer 5 :
well yes.why shouldn't it work here?! LOL my laptop brand is DELL(american).it works amazing here in england.no pb!
Answer 6 :
yes, I am sure. My friend got one here and then she moved to germany( not UK but still,)and she emailed me and she told me she was using her laptop. Though you will have to get different internet connection
Answer 7 :
There are two issues to worry about: differing power, and slightly different keyboards. Most machines these days will work on whatever power is available, but you must be sure to check. Keyboards made for the UK have the symbol for British pounds on one of the keys, which caused a minor shuffling which I found somewhat annoying when using a UK machine. Aside from these issues, it should be fine.
Answer 8 :
Depending on where you are, you may need to buy a small little power converter. If you're looking at a Macbook Air, I'd really suggest you take a glance at a *real* sub-notebook, like the Asus EEE.
Answer 9 :
yeah it should work fine. but the macbook air wouldn't be my first pick. Id like to have one but they don't have a cd-rom drive. and with out a cd-rom drive if something happened to it you would have to pay someone else fix it for you.

Two possible answers, one is twelve hundred after a loong bike journey after stopping for breakfast and/or lunch and most assuredly a light snack with a beverage. The other, is answering an ad and writing a check(only twenty dollars more), or paying cash which would run you in the area of seventy-five thousand cash, with or without delivery.

Do I need a voltage converter for my laptop when I travel to the UK?
Do I need a voltage converter for my laptop when I travel to the UK?
I have the plug-in adapter but do I need a voltage converter for my laptop? Someone told me that my laptop should automatically detect the voltage difference and it just converts itself. This makes me nervous as I don't want my laptop to blow up!
Laptops & Notebooks - 10 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Yes if the plug in adapter does not automatically adjust to the new voltage, they are on 220, whereas we are on 120. Plus, the outlet plugs are different than ours.
Answer 2 :
U should carry a voltage converter to be on safer side...
Answer 3 :
hell ya they r 2 compleaty diffrint types of voltig
Answer 4 :
Don't worry, it will just convert itself. My sister bought a laptop in Sweden and brought it back here to the United States, and all she needed was the power adapter converter, not the voltage converter. Unless you are using a very old laptop you won't have any problems.
Answer 5 :
Unless you want to destroy your laptop, you're going to need a power converter plug since Europe is on 200+ volts and America uses something like 112 volts.
Answer 6 :
There should be a rating plate on one side of it if it says it is good up to 240-250 volts you don't need one, but you will need the plug adapter. Never try to us a voltage converter on you computer use a step-down transformer(240-250v to 110-120v)
Answer 7 :
Yes you would. Some laptops have variable power supplies but not too many do. You can check the power brick name plate. If it says 110-220v 50-60 Hz then yes it will work. Their voltages are usually 220V compared with our 110V. You just need the correct plug converter to plug it in.Best bet is to check with a place that deals in travel. They would have a kit with multiple converters for the various styles of European plugs. Or check with the manufacture of the laptop for a European power supply.
Answer 8 :
dont listen to all these, im from the UK all u americans think i will need this, i will need that, what if this................ is this ok in britan ??? shut up for fuck sake. it will be fucking fine mate, chill the fuck down !!!!!!! i didnt need an adapto when i went to NY - nice place by the way. hope this helps you mate
Answer 9 :
Look on your laptop's power adapter. If it shows 120V/220V 50Hz/60Hz, then it will work. You may need to get an apapter that changes the standard 110V plug to that UK uses.

If i buy a new laptop on amazon.co.uk now, will it come with a free upgrade to Windows 7?
| If i buy a new laptop on amazon.co.uk now, will it come with a free upgrade to Windows 7? It doesnt say anything on the site, but do they have an obligation to distribute windows 7 to people who but a vista laptop now? Laptops & Notebooks - 4 Answers People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions : Answer 1 : It only applies to certain models, so you would have to look up the model on the manufacture site of the computer and see if that model applies for a free upgrade to windows 7. You wouldn't be getting the upgrade through amazon, it would be coming striaight from the manufacture of the computer. Answer 2 : the upgrade would be Cheap like 10 bucks... But not be free.... If you are a student... i would recommend going to the engineering building in your university and asking them for a copy of windows 7... They are usually Very Cheap like 50 bucks... for a legit copy... But i won't recommend buying from amazon... You want to test the laptop out before you buy... Go to a local Store and look for laptops with Windows 7 On it... get a feel for it... i am sure you would love it... But Amazon won't give you windows & for free... I am pretty sure about that... until and unless it mentions when you are buying the product... . Answer 3 : If the seller does not mention free windows 7 upgrade then you will not get. Better to confirm with the seller before you buy. Answer 4 : No, they don't have an "obligation." Only some models from some manufacturers are eligible. In most cases, you need to obtain the upgrade via the manufacturer. Check the website of whoever manufactured the laptop to see if it's eligible. Also keep in mind that refurbished models and/or things with Vista Home Basic installed automatically *aren't* eligible the vast majority of the time. And remember you have to register for the upgrade. It's not something they send to you automatically, and in most cases they're going to charge you shipping for it. |

Any one tell me . if i buy a laptop from UK and one from pakistan . is there any difference between them ?
Both having same specs. is there any technical difference , like china made same product but different quality and send these product according to the value. like 2 world countries and 3 world countries.
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Laptop from Pakistan may be a fake one.
Answer 2 :
Different Plugs and cables, Pakistani one may be fake, possibly different languages... Pakistani don't make good laptops.
Answer 3 :
The main difference will be in the warranty, a laptop bought in the UK will have a warranty valid in the UK and an international warranty only valid for UK citizens when outside the UK while a laptop bought in Pakistan will have a warranty valid in Pakistan with the international warranty only valid outside Pakistan for Pakistan citizens. There will probably be some other differences, mainly that you'll get a different plug, probably a different keyboard layout (but it can be remapped in software) and some configuration settings will be different but not much of the technical side is going to be any different.

| Looking for a laptop in the USA to be shipped to the UK , any help ? i was wondering is there any website i can get a Laptop from the USA , and get it shipped the to UK ? i was looking at HP pavilion's , i noticed the price difference from the USA to the UK and was wondering if i could buy it from a USA website ? this would really help ! thanks ! Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions : Answer 1 : i honestly dont know why but companies have to versions one for the US and one for the UK and i have noticed that the UK dosent get as many choices as the US people do Answer 2 : Check the warranty including return to base will still apply if you buy from the US and use in UK Check that the physical keyboard is UK configuration ( does it have a Euro key?) Consider wisely if the goods haveto be returned to the US ( cost 5kg courier to US) Expect to get caught for import duty (c17.5% over £40) and couriers handling charges for the custom charge ( fixed charges from £15 upwards) ... these are non-negociable initially as you will not get posession of the goods without paying the full price including the extra handling/customs |

What laptop should I buy in the UK to take with me to Japan?
What laptop should I buy in the UK to take with me to Japan?
The question says it all really - I am laptop stupid (been PC for over a decade) what should I buy to take with me to Japan - needed for watching dvds, listening to music, downloading a bit of TV, trasfering photos/video from camera to disc and internet. I have around £400 - If needs must £ wise happy to buy extra portable memory/storage and maybe a external re-writer once in Japan but want to get the computer here (prefer windows XP and want to make sure I have software so the system can recognise Japanese characters.) Can a smart tech person help out a silly not very tech person having to go to somewhere like PCWorld to ask for help :-(

Answer 1 :
Talk to a salesman and make sure your new laptop power supply will support 110, 60 cycles.. Most modern laptops have a power supply that will run 110, 60 cycles or 220, 50 cycles. The only requirement will be to purchase a plug adapter, which is really inexpensive.
Answer 2 :
if you're thinking of buying a laptop you should check out this site first. they give you a sony vaio laptop for FREE! all you need to do is complete a few quick tasks for them.

Will my wireless laptop from Uk work in USA? or do I need a different adaptor.
will my wireless laptop from Uk work in USA? or do I need a different adaptor? Thanks?
My current adaptor is 100 - 240 volt. Will this do the job in USA? Thanks again.
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
you'll need a different adapter to charge the laptop in the wall.
Answer 2 :
Your wifi will work fine, but your power adapter will need a converter to convert the 230v to 110v
Answer 3 :
You won't need a voltage converter like someone else wrote, because your power adapter is good for voltages between 100 and 240 volts. 110 V is used in the US. So, you'll only need a plug adapter. Go to your local electronics/electrical/travel supplies store (Tandy?) and ask for a plug adapter for the US and you should be set. It should be fairly inexpensive. Again, you don't need a voltage converter or transformer as your laptop's power adapter can already handle the mains voltage in the US. If you can't find a store in the UK, you should be able to find a plug adapter in the US too. Try Radio Shack or Brookstone. Wireless should work without any problems. There are no country-specific differences there.

Help buying a laptop in the UK?
Help buying a laptop in the UK?
I want a laptop for writing and internet surfing on the go, so I'm looking for something light and small. My husband and I have a good machine for gaming and more complicated computing, so something basic is fine, but it needs to be affordable and reliable. Any suggestions about what to buy or where to get a good deal? Also, our current laptop has Microsoft Office installed on it (we purchased it for download)- if I want to install it on the new machine, will we need to buy it again? Thanks for all your help!

search in ebay is the most website for sale
Answer 2 :
id recommend toshiba their small (15.4") budget satellite laptops will do the trick but if you want the extreme of small and light their portege R500 is the smallest and lightest laptop currently manufactured by any manufacturer but is relatively expensive at around £1000 microsoft office if you bought it for download the end user license agreement (EULA) will be for one computer only unless otherwise stated, so the answer to that would most likely be a no im afraid
Answer 3 :
TR Vidcom is offering a wide range of cost effective desktop and laptop computers. They offer flexible renting options too if you can't purchase one.

Where in the UK could I buy a laptop case that isn't obviously a laptop case?
I recently started a new job where I have to bring my own laptop, however I'm abit worried about carrying it around in a laptop case in case it makes me a target for muggers. Could I possibly be able to buy a laptop case which is in the style of say a large handbag or backpack?

I don't know specifics for the UK, but I KNOW that here in North America it's not too hard to get a laptop case which looks like a large-ish backpack. My brother has one, I've seen them in school supply stores - like for universities - where I might get a regular backpack.

What does OS mean in computer terms and how do you get a UK game to work on a US laptop?
What does OS mean in computer terms and how do you get a UK game to work on a US laptop?
I bought a game from amazon called The Movies Expansion pack but it won't work on my computer. The back of the box says its from the UK and the screen always tells me access denied. Seller believes it should work. I do have the first game.

Answer 1 :
OS = Operating System Your OS refers to whether you're running Windows or a MacOS which is what runs on Apple computers. There's quite a few other lesser-known operating systems such as Unix and Linux.
Answer 2 :
OS is operating system, like windows XP, or vista, or mac
Answer 3 :
OS means operating system but i dont no the i=othe 1
Answer 4 :
OS stands for operating system. 1. Some games require that you have updated drivers for both video and sound. If you haven't yet updated those drivers, give that a try. 2. Do you have any other cd/dvd rom drives you can try using? Your cd/dvdrom may be failing and causing the errors when the game is unable to read the data from the disk in the drive. 3. UAC (User Access Control) is also an issue. If you enable or disable UAC after the game was installed, the game won't run properly. Enabling or disabling UAC changes the location of where files are stored. So if you installed with UAC enabled, make sure you leave it enabled for when you play the game. 4. Sometimes laptops video drivers just aren't compatible with certain games. If thats the case there really isn't anything you can do about it. 5. Try running the game in compatibility mode for XP. Why dont you try to reinstall the game? it might fix it.

Answer 1 :
Try using the package - you will be asked for the key then - and you will be prompted to register. You need an internet connection to register within 30 days, otherwise the package will lock and you will not get the full usage that you paid for. (This can be resolved with a phonecall to a Microsoft Call Centre)
Answer 2 :
try to use it
Answer 3 :
go to start menu programs and search for ms-office
Answer 4 :
Open any office application (ie. Word, Excel, etc.), then click on the Office Symbol for the Main Menu, then Choose the Options button on the bottom right side of the Menu. In the next window select resources on the bottom left of the menu and on the right you will see Office Diagnostics appear. Running Office Diagnostics will confirm that Office is installed properly or not.

Which is better, buying a laptop in india or uk?
I just wanted to know where i can find cheap laptops here in india or uk.I amleavin india on september and will go to uk.And i really need to get a laptop immediatly as i get there, without waste of many days

People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
if you need it that badly get it in india
Answer 2 :
I would have to say in India just because any time you call for computer tech support you always get someone who is in India.
Answer 3 :
buy it in radioshak my little friend they always have the best prices
Answer 4 :
I'm not sure what you mean by 'cheap' as in used or new? If new you might want something that offered a warranty supported in the U.K. However, if I were you I would wait and buy it in the U.K. at a place where you can at least take it back if it needs repaired or upgraded. Why don't you visit the: Home > Local Businesses > United Kingdom section of Yahoo Answers and ask a question sharing where you will be located and what are some good local computer stores to find a great price on a notebook? Good Luck!
Answer 5 :
Buying electronic goods and items in UK is not cheap. UK has higher tariffs and duties than other European countries. I suggest you take a flight with a layover at either UAE at Dubai or if not THEN go to Ireland and take a flight out of UK from Dublin in Republic of Ireland instead. Reason being You will easily save some 5 top 10 % in cost if you buy it outside UK. Or cross the english channel and buy it in France , it can still be cheaper. Moral of the story :- Buying a Laptop in UK is not cheap and UK's tax structure wont give you a good deal, better buy it India you will atleast get the techsupport and warranty valid in South Asia.!!!
Answer 6 :
You must spend your money for the best brand. As I know HP and Dell are the best in laptops for a long time and they are very reliable too. I trusted HP and I bought a HP laptop 2 years before, and still like the day I bought it. Didn't even have to service it at least once up to now. I recommend you to buy a HP (with experience) or Dell laptop. On www.hp.com you can even customize your laptop. And also you can check the price.

Answer 1 :
if you need it that badly get it in india

Wil my UK electrical appliances (phone chrger, laptop, work with adaptor in Seoul or do I need voltage adaptor?
I am going to Seoul, Korea in a few weeks and have bought a plug adaptor for my laptop charger, phone charger etc but will this work or do I need to buy one that actually converts the voltage too? Thanks in advance!!
Other - Destinations - 1 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Seoul uses 220V 60Hz and the UK 240V Hz. If your appliance is 220-240V 50-60Hz then yes, if it's only 50, then it might not. Also make sure that you DO take a travel adaptor...or change the plug.

I would recommend the Asus EEE PC. Brand-new, it's around $300. Fantastic laptop, small and compact. Only problem is that it runs on a Linux operating system (sometimes this will not work for you). No CD drive.
Answer 2 :
Do not get the EEE pc. I've got one and I'd much rather have a laptop. EEE pc's are crap, they're for browsing the internet, and crash extremely often which pisses everyone off especially if the document isn't saved. And the person above is wrong because I am on my EEE pc now and it's got Windows XP, and on the sticker it even says 'Designed for Microsoft Windows XP' For a laptop try looking at Amazon.co.uk, I'm sure you can find some second hand ones. A Dell is a good choice but I'd have a Sony or an LG, but Dell's are just as good. Good luck and I hope you find what you want :)
Answer 3 :
I think that eBay is a great choice. As long as the seller does international shipping, has great feedback so you know you won't get ripped off, and is willing to answer questions about the item you are good to go. You can find some really great products there. Another I reccomend is eCost.com. They sell refurbished PC's but they are still great and you can get them for low prices. I am not sure if they ship to the U.K, but I got my pc from there and they are great.

Just get it sent to you. I buy stuff from the states a lot and never get customs stopping it. if they do stop it and you have to pay VAT then it will be on the value of the item, but their evalutation of the item will be different to yours...
Answer 2 :
i doubt you'd pay duty on that because few items of computer hardware these days attract duty, and even still, its not expensive enough to warrant import duty. so unless the postal service declare the value incorrectly i don't think you'll pay duty. its vat that will be applicable, even if its second hand. 17.5% of the value of the import, which in your case is your £77 + £30 postage. if your unsure, ring the import advice line - 0845 010 9000 option 2

UK - purchase a laptop, would i get WINDOWS 7 already installed in it?
or would i have to buy a WINDOWS 7 cd separately? as for example i want to buy a laptop and on the website it says operating system: windows vista home premium. unless they have not updated their websites and laptops
Laptops & Notebooks - 4 Answers

Answer 1 :
Windows 7 isn't out yet, but you should be entitled to a free upgrade if you get a Vista PC.
Answer 2 :
Hi, Windows 7 isn't on general release just yet so I very much doubt it. Contact the site and ask them, or wait a while and no doubt it will be. Arnak
Answer 3 :
Windows 7 retail version is not out in the stores, but you could contact the store if they offer a free upgrade from vista to windows 7 because all merchants offer free upgrade and they should offer too.
Answer 4 :
Many OEM's are currently offering a free upgrade to Windows 7 upon its widespread release on October 22. You'd need to confirm that whatever you're looking at is eligible and you then have to register for it (and likely pay a small shipping fee when it's sent to you). You can't buy a computer with Windows 7 pre-installed before October 22, nor can you find retail copies of the software before that date to buy separately.

Answer 1 :
All your software should be legal. You won't need the original disks, but if you have illegal software, it can be traced. However, the copyright people wanted immigration to check computers, ipods and so on, and immigration refused. But if they wanted to stop and search you and your computer because they were suspicious of you, they could do.

What is the cheapest laptop in the UK at the moment, or the best "value" entry level laptop. I want to spend no more than £400 and it being the sales was hoping to get a bargain. If I buy a laptop in England with a UK-based ISP will I be able to connect to the internet in Taiwan?
My parents want to get me a laptop for Xmas, but I live in Taiwan and only go back to my home in the UK intermittently. Would it be better for my parents to get an "internet ready" laptop or not? It would be great if I could use it in both countries. Would I need two separate ISPs? I am a relative novice when it comes to computers and any help would be much appreciated.
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers

Answer 1 :
An internet ready laptop means that it has a LAN card and probably a wireless card. There is no point in your parents getting an ISP in UK if you live in Taiwan. Just tell them to buy you the laptop and you can get an ISP account from an ISP in Taiwan.
Answer 2 :
Yes you will need two separate ISPs, one for UK and one for Taiwan. For the laptops, most of the laptops sold in the market today is internet ready. You can shoot me an e-mail if you need any help. I'm a DSL technical support agent. prue_haliwell_15@yahoo.com
Answer 3 :
If you are living in Taiwan long-term, then you should have your parents put the money in your bank account ..... and then you should buy the laptop in Taiwan. Also, you have to consider that if living in Taiwan long term, you will probably want to set up your computer with Chinese-English bilingual capability. That will be easy to do in Taiwan. But in the UK that would be much more difficult. (One would assume that the UK is a primarily English speaking environment .... ) So, in terms of getting an "internet ready" laptop, of course you will want to do so, however I recommend that you do it in Taiwan. As far as having an ISP goes ...... in the present day and age, you really don't need an internet account with a local provider if you are not living in the area on a long-term basis ..... All you need is an "internet connection." An "internet connection" can easily be gotten at a friend's house or an internet coffee shop. If you use web-based email (such as hotmail, gmail, etc.) and web-based blogs, etc. .... you can view all of your online emails, weblogs, from anywhere in the world. If you maintain a website via FTP, then you can have your FTP program, and the necessary access codes, on your laptop. In a similar manner, you can access and maintain that website from anywhere in the world with only an "internet connection."
