Pissed off online buyer!A laptop i've ordered one month ago with Asus laptop UK and i have'nt received it yet.?
Its being already one month i've ordered the Laptop from the asuslaptop.co.uk website. According to the email, that i got they said ,it shud get dispatched within 5 business days. Just after i ordered , i got an email that the some information abt the credit card was missing as they couldnt deliver it to the address i wanted, as whole they wre after the money. Then i called after one week, they said due to the Iceland volcanic ashes, the item could not be imported, i called the next week, they said, they should be coming. No news!!!! I called again, they said the next day its reaching uk, once its there, it wud get dispatched, no thing as such happened. I still call back, now they saying the problem is with the company itself, they are not sending it.. As a buyer i thought online would be faster, i dnt think this is the case. i want to know my right as a consumer , i mean when the company needed my money, they were after me and now, they dnt even care to call and let me knw whats happening!!! They have my money, i dnt have anything. I want to do something, but i dnt know what. Help me please to screw them.!!!

Answer 1 :
Simply because it's online doesn't automatically mean it will be faster. That was a huge complaint with Dell Computer for awhile - buy a computer and wait 2 months in some instances. You had 2 things go wrong. The first was the glitch with your credit card. That delayed the ordering. But the biggie was the volcano. Not only did it screw up your order, it caused a back log in shipping and unloading. Planes to the UK were stopped more than once. ASUS this time isn't at fault. They can't control the eruptions. Your expectations were unrealistic in light of the volcano. Seriously, what do you expect them to do? Fly it in despite they were forbidden to do so? Also you write yourself it would be dispatched within 5 days of receiving the order - not received but SENT. You were not going to get it within 5 days; it was going to be shipped out within 5 days. You have no legal cause for complaint. Have you written them and asked for an ETA? Or have you sat and stewed about it instead? You can't screw them. Not legally. The only thing you can do is cancel your order, halt the credit card payment via a complaint and stroll down to your local store and buy one and take it home.
Answer 2 :
is it a fake company???? if not,,,,then for sure you will get the money back they dont want their reputation bad

I'm buying a laptop from romania, will it work in the UK?

I'm buying a laptop from romania, will it work in the UK?
Does Romania have the same power mains as we do? I know i'll need an adapter but just wondering if the voltage is the same?
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
That sort of question is a good reason for not buying expensive equipment from unknown countries. Also what software will it have and will the keyboard be British standard? I know that Swedish keyboards are different, so Romanian ones may also be different. Be very sure of what you are buying before committing money. You may have to buy a whole new software suite that would negate any savings.
Answer 2 :
The adapter is most likely 110-240 volts, 25-60Hz, so it'll work just about anywhere there's mains power. But the operating system will most likely be Romanian (can you understand it?), and the keys will have different symbols.
Answer 3 :
Yes it will but you'll need a mains plug adapter. Both countries are 220V

The phone is a Sony Ericsson W810i on Orange. It comes with a USB cable and I'm just wondering if I could use the mobile as a phone line to connect my laptop to the internet when I'm travelling. I realise it's a long-shot but it would seem stupid if I can't in this day and age.

FROM WHERE?!?!?!!? ARE WE SUPPOSED TO GUESS???
Answer 2 :
by air a couple of weeks, by sea a couple of months usually. customs will want their bit so you will get a letter and will have to go to parcelforce to pay and pick it up or pay online
Answer 3 :
Since you didn't tell us where your parents are sending the laptop from i'm going to assume you live in their basement. So i'd say a couple minutes. It'll take as long as it takes your mother to bring you your pizza pockets and cheetos.

at least a 15" screen, and a decent processer, 1gb ram, windows xp or better, 40gb hdd

Mine is and you can't have it.
Answer 2 :
Instead of just saying cheap which mean your could get any hunk of junk. What you should do is call up a couple of your local computer stores and ask the tech guys there opinion on a couple of laptops that suits you. Once you have some specific names don't pay retail for it, use this free web app, basically it rides on top of all the internet shopping sites of your area to bring you up the cheapest results, you will need to watch the 1min video when you go to the link to know how it works and how to search with it. It even scan through amazon.

It doesn't really matter, you can just buy a power converter for the plug.
Answer 2 :
Bring it. wont be a problem. Will just need a power adapter you can pick up at the airport
Answer 3 :
cheaper to buy a laptop from the USA for US dollar! bring it in as personal item (cell phone, digital watch etc)
Answer 4 :
Bring it with you. The only thing you'll need is a mains/outlet adapter for the powerpack.
Answer 5 :
Take it with you. Look on bottom or side your charger, it will say 100-240VAC, 50-60 Hz. So no need to buy adapter. Well maybe a adapter to change to whatever plug they use in England if it is different than Canada.

Did you know that most newer display adapters allows you to rotate your screen display? Rotating your screen is not something that we normally do because our monitor sits the way it is and we don’t move them upside down. However this is something that I just learned today because I have a project on mounting a LCD TV that is mounted in 90 degrees so that it displays in portrait. When I plug in a laptop to the LCD TV, I will need to rotate the laptop screen in order to match the orientation of the display otherwise people will have to tilt their head 90 degrees to read what is on the screen. Other than that, if you have a projector that is mounted upside down, you’ll need to rotate your screen 180 degrees or else the computer that is connected to the projector will be shown upside down. A lot of people have netbooks such as EeePC nowadays because they are small and portable. You can also consider rotating the screen so that you can read PDFs and other documents in A4 format more comfortably. Today I will share with you how easy it is to rotate your display. First method is to try looking if your display adapter driver supports rotating display or not. Right click desktop and select Properties to open up your Display Properties. Go to Settings tab and click the Advanced button. On my laptop that is using ATI driver, there is a Rotation tab. It could be Rotate tab as well. On my desktop that is using NVIDIA driver, I’ll have to go to the NVIDIA Control Panel to access the Rotate Display options. You can now rotate 90 degrees to the right or left and also 180 degrees.

I believe he meant the US version of XP will not allow for Japanese input (without the purchase of expensive software). Of course, the Japanese XP would allow for native language support. Multi language support is one of the reasons I like Mac OS X. The ability to have many different languages in the same document is also very cool as I often have different disclaimers and usage info in them. I don't think I've seen it this extensive built in any OS. The ability to switch languages in the OS and most applications, menus, etc. change as well. Along with unix support so I can access a whole lot of different networks. I always have Terminal running... Answer 2 :
This Samsung is a good laptop with the features that allows you to play games and also is fast.
Answer 3 :
Well, you're not going to get a Sony or an Apple with that price. MAYBE if it's refurbished, but even that's just about impossible. Here's the cheapest Mac I could find: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/FC506B/A?mco=MTM3NDgzNjY But good news! Dell is still in your price range. XD The computer I'm using right now is a Dell. I bought it last November. It's a Dell Inspiron 14R N4010. I built it on the Dell website and got it improved. It ended up costing me a little over $700 (around £440). It's a fairly good computer. I'm glad I made the purchase. Dell's (around the price you and I pay) aren't the best. But they will do the job. And if you want a fast computer, make you get a damn good processor. LOL I got an Intel core i3 and it's a little slow for my taste. I saw the one you picked out in your last question. It was pretty good. I'd say it's a safe choice.

Will a UK DVD work on a Toshiba laptop?

Will a UK DVD work on a Toshiba laptop?
My friend in england was gonna send me a dvd, but they have a different region code over there (its like 2 or something) and I have a Toshiba laptop bought in america. Will the dvd work on it? And if not is there a way to get it to?
Laptops & Notebooks - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
You can change the drive settings to different regions, but on Windows this is restricted to 5 times in the drive's lifetime. The bes thing to do is buy an external DVD rom drive and set that as region 2, leaving the region 1 set up on the main drive. To change the region, go to the Device Manager, then change the DVD Rom drive region in it's Properties.
Answer 2 :
Probably not, you will need to buy a DVD player that is compatible.
Answer 3 :
It will not work on conventional media player software. I personally use DVD unlocker, which bypasses the region system. There are plenty of them out there if you just google "region free media player"
Answer 4 :
the Dvd should work Dvd's are very basic and as long as you have a Dvd drive on your computer then it should run

Should i trust a person im buying a laptop from in the UK..paying through DHL?
I'm buying a macbook pro from someone in the UK for a very low price and they said that we can do all of the money and stuff on a DHL page where i can give over the money and shipping cost on there and I should get the package within the next week or so..Should i trust this or is it a scam?
United Kingdom - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
It sounds like a scam. Why don't you tell them you'll send the money after you receive the laptop? Or why don't you bluff and say that your father is going to be in the UK for a business trip next week - where can he meet you to pay/get the notebook so you can save on shipping charges, and see what they say. A very low price is a red flag - why wouldn't he sell it for more or else locally considering there would be buyers for a cheap price?! If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is!
Answer 2 :
Can you give any more info? like the guys name or address? You can usually tell pretty quick if it is a scam just by looking at those.
Answer 3 :
i would not trust this person unless the person has given you some personal information or if you have met the seller. It sounds like a scam because the laptop is really cheap and will be sent in a week. that is too good to be true. don't trust it

Should I buy a new laptop in the USA before I move, or in the UK after I arrive.

Should I buy a new laptop in the USA before I move, or in the UK after I arrive?
My current laptop feels like it weighs 100lbs and I am thinking about getting one of the newer, lightweights (even though mine works fine for what I need). I know there is a difference with the electric, but I used a converter before with no problems. I'm just wondering on which side of the pond I will find the best deal.
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Surely you will get the best deal in the USA side! I live in UK, but my both laptops an old one and new where brought from the USA ;) Don't think twice, just go for one of the lightweights (Mac Air is really cool) and be happy!
Answer 2 :
Definitely USA I agree. Even in Sweden where I live a Mac for instance is double the usd price and the UK is allot more expensive then Sweden. I'm gonna buy a new laptop when I go to Miami next month for sure. Btw thanx for your answer.
Answer 3 :
If you buy in the UK then you'll be able to get warranty repair in the UK while if you buy in the US you'll be able to get warranty repair in the US. Whether you'll be able to get a warranty repair outside the country you buy it in will depend on whether you are a citizen of that country. If you're a US citizen then you can buy a laptop in the US and if it breaks you can get it fixed anywhere in the world under warranty while a UK citizen will only be able to get a laptop bought in the US fixed under warranty in the US (i.e. paying for out of warranty repairs or shipping it to the US and back). Laptop reliability does seem to have improved although there I haven't seen any decent statistics on it but if a laptop does break it'll be expensive to fix out of warranty.

Answer 1 :
If you do run into software errors, know that; there are a vast number of Regional patches that will update/convert just about any game and most programs to a different language/driver set. The only real problem I know of in terms of Regional hardware comes in the form of DVD players, That is: In order for you to play a UK encoded DVD on an American DVD player, you must First change that drive's Regional setting to the appropriate region. The problem is that the drive will only allow you to change the region code an average of 5 times. And then its permanently set to whatever the last change you made was.

I don't have the installation CD because Office 2007 was already preloaded on there....does anyone know how I transfer/install it over to my new laptop, which at the moment has nothing on it? It's a UK laptop if that's relevant!!
Software - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

You can't. When you transfer files like that windows will not recognize it unless you reinstall it. If you have your CD key, you can download the free trial and enter your CD key right away. If you don't have either of those you have to buy it again.
Answer 2 :
I'm not sure if your licence covers more than one laptop If your sure it does, then downloading it illegally, then using your legal serial code could work. Did you recieve a code with it? You could always try copying the files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office across on a usb stick, its a terrible way as it wont be properly installed but its a shot in the dark. UK laws on satisfactory laptop repair?

UK laws on satisfactory laptop repair?
Hi, just wondering if there are any laws in the UK that say that repairs carried out to an electronic product (a laptop) out of warranty must be satisfactory and guaranteed not to fail for a certain amount of time? I'm arranging a laptop for repair and I'm just wondering what my rights are if something goes wrong after it's returned, due to the repair work that has been carried out. Many thanks.

Answer 1 :
Any work down must be of a standard in keeping with normal care and skill. If the repair fails to fix the problem, it may not be the repair person's fault if they exercised normal care and effort. However, if the repair itself causes further damage, they can be held accountable. NO computer repair person is responsible for lost data, ensuring you have a good backup is your responsibility. Frankly, if yo are worried enough about the repair to ask these question before it has even happened, you might want to find a more reliable repairman.
Answer 2 :
Reputable laptop service centres usually guarantee their work for 90 days but can't be expected to be responsible for future (different) faults or data loss not associated with the original fault within the repair warranty period. You could take any claim about poor or inadequate service to the Small Claims Court. Any failure of parts supplied for the service (e.g. a new replacement hard drive) would be covered by the Sale and Supply of Goods Act (1994) and updates but it would be best to challenge the service centre under their warranty agreement prior to going to litigation. If possible back up your data before shipping your laptop to a repair centre and ensure, if you aren't delivering it personally, that it is in satisfactory packaging. I've seen laptops delivered to service centres in carrier bags (really) and the service centre can't reasonably be expected to be liable for any damage incurred in transit to them.

I don't want to use it in flight or anything. and will my laptop pick up on wireless in the uk? or do i need to change any applications?

NO i am VARY sorry but it will moast sertonly NOT pick up wiorliss in the uk!!!!!!!!!!!!! thear is NOTHING u can DO about this!!!! u have no choise but to remain in bubgaria forever -- all the best and my condoalonses!1111111111111111111111111111111
Answer 2 :
Yes, a laptop is small enough (even at 10kg~) that it can be carried as a carry-on on any airplane carrier. If you are referring to wi-fi access, then yes, wi-fi access is international. The 802.11b/g format is universal. So in response you will be able to use your laptop and pick up wireless in any hotspots in the UK.

Daughter going to school in UK is it ok to use laptop from US?

Daughter going to school in UK is it ok to use laptop from US?
Do we just need a voltage adaptor ---or is this not ok for long term use?
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Yes and all she needs is the adapter for the plug. Make sure it is grounded. Not a power adapter but the prong adapter you can find at radio shack and ebay(cheaper). All power supplies will step up from 110 to 240 I used mine in turkey. Like this http://cgi.ebay.com/US-to-EU-Travel-AC-Power-Plug-Adapter-Converter-NEW_W0QQitemZ330255289604QQihZ014QQcategoryZ88759QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem If you look at the powersupply it will say 110/240 so you just need a travel adapter US to UK.
Answer 2 :
Your only worry has to be the connection to an electrical outlet. For this, you need to check for two things: you need a converter for the power cable (like you mention before) AND also make sure the Power Supply for the laptop can take the 220V from the UK since by default it will be setup for 110V for the US. If it doesn't have a 110V/220V switch, I'm afraid she won't be able to use it.

Will my HP Pavillion laptop work with UK power?

Will my HP Pavillion laptop work with UK power?
I bought a hdx9494nr laptop from USA, and want to use it in the UK. I cant seem to find a UK power adapter on the internet, so what can I do? Is it possible to use a converter on the end of the USA plug? I had a look on the HP UK website and they don't seem to have one. Thanks.

Try Radio Shack, you will need one
Answer 2 :
Most new laptops will .. Look at the adpater under the input if it has 100-240V it's fine. the adapter will convert the power for you. But you will have to buy a universal adapter so that you can plug it in.... There 15 $.

UK ONLY: Does anyone know any decent cheap free laptop mobile Broadband packages?

UK ONLY: Does anyone know any decent cheap free laptop mobile Broadband packages?
I need a laptop and mobile broadband and want a cheap package (preferably one with a term about 12 months) that's good enough to use regular skype calls. Also it must have decent reception on the west coast of scotland if location is a factor.
Laptops & Notebooks - 1 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
I think you're asking a lot. Western Scotland has some very remote areas - in many areas I would expect mobile broadband services to degrade to GPRS even if there is any service at all. Even in the best served areas, Mobile broadband is not really up to running Skype IMHO. Skype introduces latency of its own which will be added to the not-inconsiderable latency of your broadband service and the result is delays so long as to make holding a conversation incredibly difficult. Finally, whenever I've looked at it, the free laptop deals always appear very poor value for money anyway.

Either free or cheap for someone who can't afford to buy a full price one? Actually it is not for me, I have my own laptop as proved by posting this question. It is for a friend of mine who wishes to start blogging but can't afford a computer. Stop being so judgemental :)

Yes...

they have different power grids and wall sockets/.
Answer 3 :
The wifi will work, however you will need to convert the plug for power... You need one of these: http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=&webid=490783&affixedcode=WW
Answer 4 :
YES-but your DVD player has to be changed to Country code 2.USA has 1.But remember you can ONLY change the code 5 times-then you can bring it to the shop to have them put in a new DVD drive or set it back to factory settings-that cost more than a new drive.I know i had to do that once. Hope this will help.Yes also the plug is diff.

Want to get a laptop uk?
Hi. I have £400 to £500 to spend on a laptop, but dont know what to get. It doesn't need to be flashy, i just want a decent laptop that's not slow. Any suggestions?

mention the purpose of use. gaming , study or business play.com is good for cheap laptop
Answer 2 :
Im guessing you live in the Uk? Try Ebay for starters to get a cheap one. But I dont neccessarily mean 'cheap' I just mean 'less expensive.' I have a Dell Inspiron Mini and it works wonders although I wouldn't recomend you getting a mini as it doesn't have that much space. just search for a Dell Laptop and you can also get them in different colours to fit your need! Happy helping :)
Answer 3 :
Hey i've just got a new laptop! Its a Dell Inspiron with intel pentium and windows vista (sorry i dont speek computer so i dont no what that mean!) It isn't slow but i like it It cost about £450 and i bought it directly from the dell website Hope this helps!!!

Voltage converter or transformer for UK laptop in Ecuador?

Voltage converter or transformer for UK laptop in Ecuador?
On 22nd August, I'm going out to Ecuador and am considering taking my laptop with me. As in the UK we use 220-240 v and in Ecuador they use 127 v , I've heard I need some kind of voltage converter or transformer. Does anyone have any tips? Can I buy these at Argos? I can't seem to find any on their website. Thanks so much! Oh you're right! I just looked and it even says that on my laptop. Thanks! :)

Answer 1 :
Your laptop power adaptor is auto sensing 100 - 240 volts AC, 50 / 60 Hz so there is no worry on account of voltage & herz differences laptops are meant for operating globally Only issue you will face is the plug / socket in all probability will be shaped different You need a simple wall plug adapter, best bought in country you are visiting viz. Ecuador Many shops at the airport itself will be stocking it, else shops in city will sell it for cheaper

will a us laptop work in the uk? e.g. the wireless settings/dvd/blueray players/ pc games and the plug outl?
I am in the usa and wondering if it would work in the uk as i going to buy a hp? Thanks any one who answers all the points!!!
Laptops & Notebooks - 1 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Yes of course. But you have to reconfigure your wireless settings once you move to a different location. It would be best to establish a new wireless connection. Otherwise, your laptop will always be trying to connect to your US wireless network (which is no longer acessible because wifi range is very limited).

Yes... if the portable hard drive can be powered solely by the USB port. If it comes with an AC adapter, most likely I doubt that it would fit into a UK electrical socket. Then I guess you have to buy a converter for that. Aside from that, it will work with any laptop.

the free ones aren't doing me any good so have you got any reccomendations for good software such as norton etc basically i just want one that will stop me downloading risky stuff and can easily remove virus's and also do scans of my laptop??

Answer 1 :
mcafee... its been working pretty good on both my house comp and my laptop
Answer 2 :
NOD32!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Answer 3 :
If any of your family have a HSBC online banking account you can download free McAfee software check the website
Answer 4 :
Hi, I use Mcafee, and i can't tell you how many times this has saved me. I use limewire and other file sharing programs that are quit risky and whenever i download a virus it removes it automatically, it updates automatically, and you can set your own preferences like for firewalls.
Answer 5 :
Have you tried Kaspersky yet? http://www.download.com/Kaspersky-Anti-Virus/3000-2239_4-10259842.html?tag=mncol
Answer 6 :
For me this one is the best http://latam.kaspersky.com/
Answer 7 :
I Recommend NOD32, Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 version 2.0
Answer 8 :
I am also from UK and have always used Mcafee for last 6/7 years but I have decided to try Kaspersky and i find it is 100% much better than mcafee. Also if you want a free spyware remover i would say spyware terminator http://www.spywareterminator.com I am not associated with any company I am going off personal experience.
Answer 9 :
My fiance puts this on our computers. He's a computer nerd, so I totally trust it, and it's free!! http://free.avg.com/
Answer 10 :
ESET NOD32 or Smart Security (best for old pc and vista) or you can use Kaspersky if you have powerful pc.(though buggy on vista) or get any thing popular but not Norton or Mcafee they will suck out hell out of you
Answer 11 :
Securing Windows operating systems from Internet assault is not a single application, or even a suite. It's layers of protection, user habits, threat landscape awareness, system configuration, real time protection, and more. Although 'all-in-one' suites may be OK, (CareOne, McAfee, or Norton) plenty of freeware is available that will do the same job (maybe better???) & don't deplete your system resources (and therefore speed). Generally speaking: as a system's convenience, interactiveness & flexibility increase: security decreases. Look through some of the suggested freeware here, study up, and pick some of the frontline, real-time defenses. Create a restore point after each install, then run the system to verify that application's 'friendliness' with your system before adding other applications. Sorry, but using Windows requires you to become a security expert, it's that simple. Something they don't tell you when you buy this system... http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/security/fwsecuritytools.html ****************** Whatever 'layers' you decide on, add this to your counter-measures arsenal: "Sandboxie" (http://www.sandboxie.com/) runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer. Use it for: Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially. Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don't leak into Windows. Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can't break out of the sandbox and can't infect your real system. Freeware. Not overly difficult to use. Don't presume you can do just anything as it does have limits; listen to 'Security Now' #174 for more details (http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm)
Answer 12 :
go here:-http://toptenantispywareviews.com/ It lists top 10 the best and latest anti-spywares reviews in 2008. You can download one and scan your system. All can be trusted.
Answer 13 :
I sell kaspersky, bit defender, system mechanic, just the right software to your Pc clean from trojan, viruses, worms and junk file. CLEAN!!

I, personally would not own a Dell, even for free. Their tech support is terrible. And most computers I fix are Dell's. What does that tell you? All my PC's are HP and great, easy, tech support.
