Does charging a US laptop in the UK reduce battery life?
I have an IBM thinkpad T42 that I purchased in the US. When I moved to the UK, I simply attach a converter and plug into UK outlets. After a few weeks, my battery performance seems to have dramatically gone down. Should I purchase a UK adaptor rather than use my US adapter/converter combo (or is this a different problem altogether)?

all you doing is uping the voltage from 110v to 240v, this shouldnt cause any problems to your battey, if your having a problem with the battery i would contact the people who sold it to ask them what is the best thing to do, since could be a problem with the battery itself.

if you have the transformer/converter, there should be problem wtih the change in voltages and it will most def not reduce ur batter life (talking from experience)

Not a problem I have a laptop bought in the USA and chargiong it here in Italy. It is 2 years old and never had problems with it. Keep in mind that battery has a life of about 500 charge/discharge cycles. After that performaces will go down quickly. I guess it's time for a new battery.

i don't think that will affect the performance of your battery. Adapters nowadays are autovoltage (110-120-210-220) and can be used with frequency of 50/60. you can check the label on your adapter if these features are also included.

The problem is more likely caused by air travel. I found if my laptop was stored in my suitcase and not brought onboard the battery didn't work too well later, and i found out later that the cold in the baggage holding area can affect battery life. At least that is what I was told by the guy at dell, but who knows if it is true. But your voltage thing is not a problem, because I know of many people who do the same thing with all different brands of laptops.

You just listed totally different power demanding games. Yes it can run wow, probably run sims 3 fine, eve possibly and probably, modern warfare 2 no. Just check the games system reqs and match them to that laptop.

Need a AC wall conversion kit . usulay located inthe lugage / Bag areas of office supply store . its like 8 differnt plugs that fit inthe wall over seas.

You'r laptop power supply should be able to automatically handle the different voltages. You will be able to tell by looking at the label on the power brick. you sould see something like: input: 110v - 240v. Almost all laptops on the market can automatically handle the different voltages. With that out of the way the only thing you need is a simple plug adapter to change the size and shape of the plug. These can be found at most electronics stores. and even many travel shops and AAA stores. Best of Luck

I don't care too much about the spec, but it does need to be small and light enough to carry round in a backpack without too much back pain! A good battery life would be useful too.

One of the advantages of either Dell or HP/Compaq, is that they're the two largest companies. So you have better options with service, parts, etc. I use a Dell Latitude at work and it's pretty decent for a PC. I have and prefer Macs at home.

I have changed the screen on an e-system 3089 uk laptop. Now it wont start-up at all.?
It was booting up previously but was useless as the original screen was physically damaged for all but a quarter of it. The screen I have fitted is an identical one part numbers match etc although it is a used part, but guaranteed to be good. I have taken all precautions against electro-static damage while changing the screen. All the plugs are secure and correctly fitted but it does not start now. Not even the fan is running. The ac adapter is fine and the charge light on the laptop comes on when it is plugged in. Any suggestions or tips? Steve.

Disconnect your new screen and see if laptop boots. If so try old screen again. This will narrow down the problem. If neither screen allows boot up it is likely that you have disturbed a connector, just open up and detach and re-attach everything that plugs in. Also make sure you haven't strained a wire and broken a joint.

Yes. It's the same Skype everywhere. I started with Skype in the US but I have used it in many countries (Europe, Asia). There is no difference whether you use it in your home country or abroad. You do need a broadband connection, and sometimes that is hard to find. By the way, I also got a webcam to use with Skype, and it works very well.

I got mine cheap by buying one new from ebay (my macbook pro cost £1400 instead of £1800 and the applecare cost me £90 instead of £300) I think people take advantage of not only the exchange rates but also student discounts and the varying worldwide cost of applecare in order to provide the machines and warranties so cheap. EDIT: the warranties are applicable worldwide.

Laptop problem - possibly 3 mobile broadband related

I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows vista from the recovery partition and now when I have the 3 mobile broadband dongle plugged into any usb port when I click 'computer' to show the drives, the computer shows the dongle as being in the DVD drive, which is impossible and shows the DVD drive as 'removable disk' (a usb port) When I unplug the 3 dongle the only drives it shows are the C drive (hard disk drive) and D drive (recovery partition on hard disk drive). I therefore have no useable DVD drive. Any suggestions ? Should I sell the laptop ? and mention the problem when I sell it / or not ?

i have a samsung r510 witch came with a 3 mobile broadband deal for free, and after just over a year i am having troubles, where some of the keys are sticking and the shift key wont spring back up. I have tried hoovering the keyboard to get any dirt from underneath but in doing so all i managed to do was suck up the W key witch then i had to retrieve and put back. I would certainly call Samsung tech support or check online to see what the warranty is/was on the computer. Most computer manufacturers only cover the computer for the first year unless you buy an extended warranty. If the computer is still covered under warranty then you can get the keyboard fixed through the manufacture. i have a samsung r510 witch came with a 3 mobile broadband deal for free, and after just over a year i am having troubles, where some of the keys are sticking and the shift key wont spring back up. I have tried hoovering the keyboard to get any dirt from underneath but in doing so all i managed to do was suck up the W key witch then i had to retrieve and put back. I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows vista from the recovery partition and now when I have the 3 mobile broadband dongle plugged into any usb port when I click 'computer' to show the drives, the computer shows the dongle as being in the DVD drive, which is impossible and shows the DVD drive as 'removable disk' (a usb port) When I unplug the 3 dongle the only drives it shows are the C drive (hard disk drive) and D drive (recovery partition on hard disk drive). I therefore have no useable DVD drive. Any suggestions ? Should I sell the laptop ? and mention the problem when I sell it / or not ? Have reinstalled windows and the dongle software and it hasn't made any difference - It doesn't even show DVD drive in 'device manager' Could the DVD drivers be missing ??

Probably nothing more than an inexpensive plug adapter. Almost all laptops have universal chargers that work almost anywhere in the world with the correct plug adapter. Check the "little box" on your ac adapter cord and if it says 100-240V 50-60Hz input, then you're good to go with the the right plug adapter. There are some blu rays I want to buy that are only released in region 1 format. I bought my laptop in the UK, but I think the same model is also sold in the US. I think it's out of production now, but here is the most similar model on the Sony website http://www.sony.co.uk/product/vn-e-series/vpcee3z0e-bq Anyway. Will region 1 disks play on it? I am just about to buy a laptop for the first time and I need to be able to use it without actually plugging it in. I have read that there are cellular cards that you just insert into the laptop, but I am not exactly computer savvy and need some help! How do they work? Do I buy one at the same time as the laptop or can I get them from somewhere else? If I buy one of these cards, do I need to have an ISP (as in, pay a rental) and can all laptops accept these cards? I don't mind paying a monthly fee, but I need to able to use the laptop in many different places. Can anyone help a confused lady?? Jake, thank you, that is exactly what I am looking for! Just one more thing, can you tell me the difference between a stick and a modem. Can both be used the same way?

In the states you are offered an internet wireless via cell phone service. Like Verizon or Cingular... In UK there must be something similar. Just check cell phone coverage for your areas you want complete mobility. The card is installed internally so you dont need to plug or carry anything.

Also, don't worry about the 60hz / 50hz difference as the chargers will be converting them to DC, which is 0 hz, anyway.

i am in the usa. and am having a bit of trouble going about how to ship,deciding on what shipping company i should use. UPS..or USPS etc.. i plan on sending my girlfriend all the way in the UK a laptop.i want to really SUPRISE her this xmass season. meaning she shudnt knw about this. how do i go about packing and which is faster?? . i also wonder whether she will be asked to pay any taxes... i dont want her to pay 4 anything. i just want her to get it n shes all set~!. please help.what do i need to do.

I think the dvd drive will be region locked but I am sure if you google "unlock dvd code" or something along that lines you will be able to unlock drive to multi region

I've accidently deleted my graphics card for a medion 15 version 2 uk laptop.
hi, i've accidently deleted my graphics card for a medion 15 version 2 uk laptop.?
i've tried to look at other posts and take advice but its all failede i cant reinstalll windows because my disk is back in london! help!!! x ok, well i tried new drives what are apparently compatible with this ol laptop and my computer automatically tries to fix the problem but cant. sorry useless with computers :s sorry!

you can not delete hardware. maybe you mean the driver for it go to you computer manufacturer site and get the driver needed

hi, im just browsing around for a fair priced mobile internet broadbrand with free laptop. So far i have looked on three, 02 and T-mobile, they all vary from around £20 (netbook with broadbrand) - £30+ (full sized laptop with less broadbrand allowance) Im just wondering if there are any other places i could look for a good deal? :) thanks x

The iphone is free and so is the apple macbook air. I thought it was gonna be some kind of a scam but it's totally free. All i did was sign up to a two week free trial on LoveFilms and then refer some freinds to do the same. It's legit and they don't ask for any credit card details, trust me cus' i don't have one. Lol. does it matter where the laptop comes from. ive been looking on ebay and theres not much in the uk but if you search everywhere theres loads.

not at all, just swap the plug, or buy a universal adaptor and that should solve your problem, don't change the plug until warranty expires though, you could have problems if you do, though i do beleive your warranty is void if it becomes faulty outside of the purchased region, don't quote me on that.

As I see it, there are 2 possible primary problems. 1. Your power adapter will be for that other country... Expect to have to buy a new power adapter... That, of course, depends on what country you purchase from. 2. You *might* encounter warranty problems if something goes wrong. Some companies might not care, other's might not honor the warranty unless you can convince them you are from the original country of purchase and maybe visiting the UK on vacation (Holiday). (If used from ebay, and it doesn't have a "factory warranty" then, this ofcourse isn't really a problem. Another thing to consider, but not necessarily a "problem" is that if you purchase from some country that doesn't speak English, the system MIGHT come preloaded with the local language as default. I, for one, would not want to be trying to run windows that has been pre-loaded with Chineese ;) Also, keep in mind, depending on what you can get the seller to list on the import/export tag, you will end up paying VAT to get it into the country.

Go to the Run prompt and type 'charmap' then pick any character you want.
Answer 2 :
In Windows XP, go to: Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Character Map. The pound symbol should be in that grid. Highlight (or click) on it, and hit the "Select" button, and then the "Copy" button. Then go to the application you want to paste it to, and right-click at the point you want the pound symbol, and select Paste.

As you hold down alt press 0163 in the keypad and you get.... £

It's the # signature. I haven't a clue as to why it is that way. Sorry. Seems to be somewhat universal. I don't have a "pound" key on my keyboard either ... and it is Canadian but I was informed that the "#" substitutes as the equivalent of a pound, at least in weight formulae. The "#" sign is referred to as the "pound key".
